Bit by bit...

Houston, we have a KITCHEN! Woooo-hooooo!
Now I can begin emptying out my garage bay filled with craigslist finds to help fill up our gigantic space. Craigslist finds like this beaut:I had long thought that some built in seating would be ideal with little kids. But with a $2,000 bid from our cabinet maker, I crossed it right off our list. Enter Craigslist. I bought this breakfast nook set for $70. Then when the guys came to paint the ceiling I asked them to use their magic sprayer to paint the entire set for $70. Then my learning-to-be-handy husband used a skill saw to cut out the bottom edges so the backside of the seats would fit flush against the wall, giving it a built-in look. The seats actually open up for more storage underneath, and I can't wait to get some cute cushions (covered in wipe-able vinyl of course!) situated for a more comfortable nook. $140....Not bad for a custom look-alike!

Even the dumb pantry door looks good with a fresh coat of white paint and new trim! And the pulls and knobs are installed and fabulous...

Meet our only new appliance:This bad boy is making all of our culinary dreams come true! After cooking on one 1960's electric burner for an entire year, the thought of having double ovens and six gas burners that ALL WORK is overwhelming. And awesome. And check out that backsplash- I helped install it a little! And now I know how to grout. (Look out guest bathroom, here I come!)

Now the hard part (for me): All of the bajillion finishing touches that make a house a home!
(While sticking to a major budget. I shake my fist at you Dave Ramsey!) First up is this double wing-back chair (where my nephew Spencer is currently napping swaddled in a pink blanket)...$50 on craigslist and a little elbow grease re-covering it in this lovely fabric and we should be sittin' pretty:I have a total love/hate relationship with these projects. I love doing them but I hate having them unfinished! And with three little girls, the reality is that everything is going to take me months. I am a poor imitation of supermom! (I like to sleep more than get stuff done.)

houston here:

i love your nook. if i had six burners i would be afraid of the middle ones; i'm sure i'd get burned somehow. double-oven??!!! is that what that mystery door on the left is? awesome!

good luck with the rest. i am waaaay to lazy to even think about attempting to recover a chair like that. if i did, i'd probably end up jerry-rigging it and refusing to let the kids on it for fear it would fall apart.

LOVE the kitchen. Teach me how to recover a chair after you teach yourself, or better yet, I'd love to help and learn with you.

Your kitchen looks amazing (I saw some pics over at Better After).
I have used Craigs List and Kijiji to furnish most of my home, all of the pieces I have picked up so far have been amazing deals!

Hi ~ Great job on the HUGE kitchen makeover! I would love to know the brand and source for the fabric you'll be using for the loveseat/sofa. Thanks for sharing your amazing projects!
